A-1 Engineering, LLC was formed in 2011 with the vision of providing the common property owner with non-biased and objective consulting services for their everyday projects and building inquiries. We recognized that the common home owner needed better information to help them with managing their homes.

A-1 Engineering is a company that provides structural engineering services to the commercial, residential, government and industrial industry. Our services include:
- Structural Engineering assessments for commercial and residential real estate transactions
- Structural Engineering assessments for concerned homeowners considering foundation repair. Note, A1 is not owned or operated by a foundation repair company. We do not receive commission, referrals fee or “kick-backs” from foundation repair companies for recommending or suggesting foundation repair.
- Structural engineering design, assessment and inspection of “retrofits” for modular homes.
- Structural engineering design, assessment and inspection of wood decks or patios.
- Structural engineering design, assessment and inspection of pier and beam (post) residential foundations.
- Structural engineering design, assessment and inspection of all foundation types for new construction (deep foundations, shallow foundations, pier and beam foundation, and concrete slab on grade)
- Structural engineering design, assessment and inspection of retaining walls constructed with heavy timber (rail road ties), concrete masonry units (CMU), cast in place concrete or segmental walls (reinforced segmental retaining wall)
- Structural engineering design, assessment and inspection of wood, steel, concrete and heavy timber framing for roofs, walls or floors (residential, commercial and industrial).
- Structural engineering design, assessment and inspection of “braced-walls” for new construction
- Structural engineering design, assessment and inspection existing roof framing for commercial buildings for the addition of new HVAC roof top units.

Our staff of structural engineers is trained, educated and experienced in structural engineering. Our knowledge and experience in structural engineering design comes from designing multi-story buildings constructed with wood, steel, concrete or masonry as well as other structures, such as: retaining walls, small pedestrian bridges, cages for housing primates, tall billboard signs and buildings in very high wind areas.
Through documentation of training, experience and exams, the Texas Board of Professional Engineers (TBPE) has recognized our licensed professional engineers to be competent in the area of structural engineering. Our licensed engineers have each holds a STR – Structural competency designator with the TBPE.
In the community, our engineers have volunteered and participated with ITT Technical Institute School of Drafting, City of San Antonio Code Compliance Building Standards Board (BSB) – Mayor Appointed - , Professional Engineers in Private Practice (PEPP), Structural Engineering Association of Texas (SEAoT), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Greater San Antonio Builders Association and the United States Army Corp of Engineers.

Mr. Cruz is a licensed structural engineer with Texas Professional Engineer License Number 108540. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with a concentration in structural engineering from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Mr. Cruz has over 15 years of inspections, construction and design experience along with proudly serving for the last 18 years as an Engineer Officer in the United States Army Reserves. As an Army Engineer Officer, CPT Cruz was influential in the completion of multiple construction projects throughout Iraq in 2009/2010. Mr. Cruz spent the early parts of his career working with Fugro Consultants in a soils laboratory where he learned the dynamics of soils. He developed his understanding of construction, construction sequence and field creativity by inspecting the construction of roadways, buildings, foundations, retaining walls, bridges and other structural systems. Mr. Cruz later worked as an offshore geotechnical (soils) engineer with Fugro-McClelland in Houston where he developed foundation recommendations for large and small offshore drilling structures throughout the Gulf of Mexico. Mr. Cruz refined his structural engineering experience working with Beicker Martinez Engineering in San Antonio where he designed and inspected small and large commercial buildings throughout Texas. As the Principal Engineer for A-1 Engineering, Mr. Cruz leads the engineering team for the company. Mr. Cruz serves on multiple city boards as a mayoral appointee to the : City of San Antonio Building Standards Board; City of San Antonio Building and Fire Related Board of Appeals and the City of San Antonio Citizens Bond Oversight Commission. Aside from practicing engineering, Mr. Cruz serves on the St Gregory the Great Catholic School Council and devotes time every year to speaking to multiple elementary and high school students to encourage them to pursue a career in engineering.
Mr. John Marin, PE - Structural Engineer (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Mr. Marin is a licensed structural engineer with Texas Professional Engineer License Number 98126. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Mr. Marin has over 15 years in the engineering and construction field. He spent the early parts of his career working as a geotechnical (soils) engineer in San Antonio where he developed foundation recommendations for buildings. He developed his skill as a structural engineer with various prominent structural engineering companies in San Antonio. Mr. Marin has assessed thousands of buildings for warranty and insurance related claims, foundation repair consideration, real estate due diligence inspections and assessments for concerned home owners. Mr. Marin continues to design, inspect and assess buildings throughout Texas. His distinct understanding in geotechnical (soil) engineering and structural engineering benefit our clients by providing a more thorough engineering insight and judgment in the design, performance and assessments of buildings. Mr. Marin has served as President of the Structural Engineers Association of Texas – San Antonio chapter.
Mr. Thomas Barratachea, EIT - Structural Engineer (email@example.com )
Mr. Barratachea is recognized as an Engineer in Training (EIT) by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers. Mr. Barratachea holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at San Antonio and an Associates of Applied Science in Welding Technology. The Texas Board of Professional Engineers has accepted his application for examining for the Professional Engineers exam and will be examining in the structural engineering discipline. Prior to joining A-1 Engineering, Mr. Barratachea designed commercial buildings for Beicker Martinez Engineering. Within the last seven years, Mr. Barratachea has designed multi-story buildings constructed with tilt wall concrete panels, steel, masonry, concrete and composite materials over various foundation types. Mr. Barratachea was introduced to structural engineering while working as a welder. He continues to design and assess commercial and residential buildings. Mr. Barratachea has personally inspected and assessed over 1000 buildings for foundation repair or problems throughout Texas.

Mr. Sierra has over 16 years of experience detailing buildings for architectural firms. Mr. Sierra holds an Associates of Science in Computer Aided Drafting from ITT Tech and is pursuing an Associates of Science in Computer Network Systems Technology. Mrs. Cruz gained valuable experience in finance and business relations while working as a financial consultant with Alliance Bernstein. Her passion for educating young children led her to teach in the San Antonio Independent School District for 8 years. She stepped away from teaching to earn a Master certificate in School Librarian Studies at Texas Woman's University. As the Director of Business Development, Mrs. Cruz leads the business development and human resources sections of the company. Mrs. Cruz has served as a member of the San Antonio Affirmative Action Advisory Board, Commission for Children and Families and currently serves as the mayoral appointee to the City of San Antonio's Library Board.
